The novel postharvest protocol for exporting 'Tainung No. 2' papaya to Japan
The novel postharvest protocol for exporting 'Tainung No. 2' papaya to Japan was developed by combining harvest maturity management, ripening treatment, and a low-temperature cold chain. Fruit treated with this protocol maintained quality after vapor heat quarantine treatment. In a two-week sea shipment to Japan, the marketable fruit rate reached 100% after container inspection.
Traditionally, papaya exported to Japan is transported at 13–15°C after vapor heat quarantine treatment, resulting in uneven ripening and severe disease development. To address these problems, an improved export protocol was developed for 'Tainung No. 2' papaya. After vapor heat quarantine treatment, the fruit was ripened to achieve uniform maturity and then stored and transported at low temperature to suppress disease development and increase marketable fruit. A commercial sea shipment to Japan resulted in a high marketable fruit rate upon arrival, demonstrating the effectiveness of this export protocol.
